       Class Syllabus/Grading Policy

                                                                              

Course Description: In Algebra 1, students build on the descriptive statistics, expressions and equations, and functions work first encountered in the middle grades while using more formal reasoning and precise language as they think deeper about the mathematics. Students add to the statistical work from the middle grades by working with standard deviation, describing statistical distributions more precisely, and measuring goodness-of-fit with residuals and the correlation coefficient. Students further their work with linear equations and inequalities as they transition from representations tied to tangible objects to working with abstract expressions. Students develop their abilities to see structure in expressions to show that expressions involving several operations are equivalent (for example, grasping that “substitution” works at various levels of complexity), and they solve linear and quadratic equations by writing a series of equivalent statements, justifying each step. Students formalize their concept of function and encounter exponential and quadratic functions as well as other examples of non-linear functions. A function that arises from a real context requires students to attend to an appropriate domain and to the meaning of various features of the function in the context. As they explore various functions, students should also leverage the power of making connections between graphical, tabular, symbolic, and contextual representations.

Materials:

Required Textbook:​ Algebra I-Big Ideas Math by Ron Larson & Laurie Boswell

Please bring the following to class with you each day.

  • Textbook

  • Math only binder/Notebook

  • Graph paper (graph paper can also be printed from this website)

  • Several pencils and a good eraser (mechanical pencils recommended)

  • Scientific Calculator

  • Staight edge (ruler)

  • Any assignments that are due

 

Methods of Instruction: Instruction will consist of a combination of lectures, class discussions, group work, board work, individual study, and usage of computer software provided by the publisher (optional).

 

Class Procedure:      

  1. Students will enter class and begin the “Do Now”.

  2. Attendance and homework will be checked during this time.

  3. Students are expected to pay attention, take notes, and complete all class work in a timely manner.

  4. Homework will be assigned daily. Please copy down assignment.

 

Class Expectations:   Students are expected to:

  • Respect your instructor and all classmates.

  • Report sick or unable to attend class, especially when a test or exam is scheduled.

  • Concentrate exclusively on the course during class hours.

  • NOT DRINK or EAT in class.

  • NOT receive or make phone calls or text messages during class time.  MUST TURN OFF all cell phones and other electronic devices (iPods, MP3s, etc.) before entering the classroom.  If you use a cell phone in class, you must leave for the remainder of the class session. If you repeatedly forget to turn off your cell phone and it rings and interrupts the class, you must leave for the remainder of the class session and you must meet with your teacher before attending the next class.

  • Arrive to class on time.  Late students are responsible for all missed material.  If you are repeatedly late, you must meet with your teacher to discuss this matter.

  • Leave class at the end of the period.

  • Come to class prepared.  Reviewing notes from the previous class, reading appropriate sections of the textbook, and completing homework will enormously increase your understanding of the math topics covered in this course.  It is especially strongly recommended that you do the homework in a timely manner!

  • Ask questions.  Questions should be asked in class. Please ask for help before you fall behind.

 

Grading Policy: The following items will be included in your grade for this course.

  1. Tests (announced) and Quizzes (may be unannounced)  

  2. Homework/Class work (to be checked daily) and Class Participation (includes class activities, class work, etc.)

  3. Your grade will be based on a point system. Your percentage will be calculated by dividing your total points by the total of possible points and then the corresponding letter grade will be given according to district guidelines.

  4. Please note the following items that pertain to grading in this course:

Marking Periods  %60 (Tests 30% & Quizes 30% )​

Homework/Classwork 20%

Midterm Exam 10%

Final Exam 10%

NOTE: Completing assigned reading and homework in a timely manner and contributing to class discussions will greatly enhance your chance of success in this course.  Mathematics cannot be understood without doing a significant amount of outside study.
